Thanks to the Smyth Grant, Foundation that sponsors travel for public school teachers, I was able to travel to french speaking Benin, West Africa. While I was in Africa, I lived with 2 host familes, one in Cotonou and one in Abomey. I found the people in Benin to be quite welcoming and friendly. In Abomey, I volunteered in an orphanage that housed a little over 200 children. While my experience there was heartbreaking, it was also an adventure that has changed my life and my world view in ways that are difficult to express.
This site is designed to share my experience in the attempt to spread the word to provide help for the orphans in Benin. I am their advocat and am inviting you to be an advocat for them as well. Please follow my links at the top of the page. I need your help to help these children who have no one.
The most frustrating part of spending time there was feeling like I would not be able to help the children that lived there in any large, long-term way. Therefore, I have started this site and project to try to do the small things I can for these children and with the help of others, make those small things bigger. I am in the process of collecting goods and money (for shipping and mosquito net and screen purchases) to send to the children there. Please see this link for activity.
